5 out of 5 stars Great buy   February 15, 2010

After shopping around Amazon offered the best price on this TV. It was so easy to set up; just fix the stand, plug in and switch the power on and the set did the rest (bearing in mind I am a female and not clued up technically)I am using it with Freeview. The picture quality is fantastic, the sound quality superb, I was worried that the size of the set would be overpowering in the room but it's perfect. I wasn't looking for a all singing all dancing TV and realise that Panasonic have already advanced the technology on this TV however I am more than happy with my purchase.

Bought this Panasonic to replace a Samsung LCD 40" TV, which was to be fair, pretty damn good. However, as with all LCD screens, depth is sadly lacking and ocassionally, motion blur can occur, for instance whilst watching the ball in a football or rugby match. I looked at all the reviews for both LCD and plasma, then did some further in-shop research and decided to go for the 42" plasma. At 37 kgs, it is no lightweight, but these are generation 2, so much lighter than the earlier model which tipped the scales at 45kgs. As other reviewers have commented, picture quality is brilliant, with rich vibrant colours and that all important depth of field. No motion blur either. Rear connections are well catered for, although disappointing to see no optical digital (Toslink) output. This TV can be wall mounted, but at 37kgs, be careful just where you do mount it. As my other AV equipment is Panasonic, Viera Link connects all with just one remote control. Built-in Freeview tuner is sensitive and easy to use. It used to be said that Plasma TV's eat the lecky, but here are some interesting facts; Samsung 40" LCD consumed 183 watts whilst this Panasonic uses 186 watts. Clearly the energy use gap is narrowing. My son-in-law has an early Panasonic Plasma 37" which uses 386 watts, so Panasonic have obviously done some work here. Please do bear in mind that despite all the HDMI and component inputs/outputs, this TV is HD Ready. It is NOT full HD. However, this only really becomes apparent if you watch a Blu-ray DVD close up. Easy solution is don't sit too close to the screen, then you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Sound quality from any flat screen TV is not going to be brilliant, and here this is also very much the case. Hook it all up to a home cinema system and it is no an longer an issue.
The price?. Well, quite simply, you won't find a better entry level plasma TV from any of the major brands. So don't leave it too late.

5 out of 5 stars superb TV at a bargain price   January 30, 2010
Mr. Alan Mitchell (St Helens England)
Was searching for a bigger TV for our lounge ( to keep up with the son in law) My last two TVs have been Panasonics, so I was happy with the brand. The item was delivered promptly and was so easy to set up. As soon as the screen lit up, the whole family were impressed with the picture & sound quality. My son in law is now jealous of us. I would whole heartedly recommend this TV,the only criticism, is because the screen is so large , I now have to sit further back in the room. Not one for a small room.Panasonic TX-P42X10B 42-inch Widescreen HD Ready Plasma TV with Freeview

4 out of 5 stars Good 4 the price, but I'm hard to please..   January 20, 2010

I bought this a couple of weeks ago but waited to do the review to allow for bedding in. Have replaced a 32" flat screen CRT Toshiba which had excellent picture and a number of sound and picture options so this Panasonic had a hard act to follow. Decided to go for Plasma after reading reviews comparing Plasma and LCD which seemed to put Plasma ahead in terms of Picture quality. What they failed to mention is the extra power consumption. I looked at the TV in my local showmroom but they only display with HD and I only have Sky+ so had to take a chance.

Set Up - very easy- no problem at all. 10/10

Sound - I was used to surround sound options on my previous set, but the sound from this set is ample for my living room which is 15' x 26'. You can add extra speakers if you like but you would need to route them through some kind of amplifier/hi fi system and I dont thinks its worth the bother. 8/10

Picture - There does not seem to be an option to switch between wide/cinema 4:3 etc. It is all automated which is a bit anoying when you cant get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen sometimes.

The most important point to make really is that you need to be sitting at least 3 metres away from the TV to get a perfectly clear picture. If you sit closer than that you should buy a smaller screen as you will noitce imperfections in the picture quality the closer you get. I have fiddled around for ages with the colour/sharpness/contrast/brightness/warmth etc to get the picture how I like it. Its seems the colours are very vivid especially the reds and greens but if you turn the colour down the other colours just look washed out. This annoyed me at first but I am getting used to it now. Some programmes are beautifully clear, others ( the American ones) are a bit blurry and pixelated at times. The whites are sometimes too bright and make everything look glary. And then sometimes it looks like everything been recorded on a cloudy day as its very dull. I cant get it right, but I am very fussy, so if anyone knows the secret formula for this perhaps you could let me know. So only 7/10 for picture I'm afraid.I have to admit its a better picture than any other set my relatives have. I dont seem to get as much motion blurr as they do.

A previous Reviewer said he couldn't get his sky remote to adjust the volume. It is possible if you reset your remote on the sky installation page. Code is on the Sky website.

Would I buy one again? Maybe, its a very good price but I would do some more research on LCD's first.

Lastly- should mention excellent service from Amazon. First set arrived smashed so I followed the online returns advise and had another delivered just a few days later with the first set collected the same day. So no complaints , these things happen.

5 out of 5 stars Superb - Even Better Given Price !   January 19, 2010

Oh yes......Got this from Curry's before Amazon sold them, from just 565 GBP online. Absolutely pwnns my previous Sanyo, Philips and Samsung Series 4 LCD TVs for the same price.

Handles movement briliantly, compard to the constant smearing effect with sub 1200 GBP LCDs. Blacks are vastly better though not perfect.

Definitely worth buying unless you can afford 1400 GBP for a 100Hz, LED TV....even then I think the picture is much softer and more realistic.

I'll be upgrading to a G10 50" shortly, yet if I relied on how they look in the showrooms, I would never have even considered a plasma. You really need to look on the AVForums, and trust what people are saying about Plasmas compared to LCDs.....it's all true !

They look washed out and browny in the shop, but once home under lowish lighting...wow !
