4 out of 5 stars A good solid plasma TV   December 9, 2006

In 2005 we decided we needed a new TV and we went out and bought this 42" Hitachi plasma version. I wanted a plasma TV (preferring plasma over LCD for this size of screen), HD-Ready, and with a HDMI port. Basically at its launch it was one of the flagship products of Hitachi and was particularly appreciated for the quality of its panel. It has the speakers installed along the bottom rather than on the sides, so it looks smaller than other 42" screens. There is lot of talk about it having an improved 3D sound, but to be honest I don't really notice much different with any other TV. The quality of the screen is fine, provided you actually view it from about 4-5 metres. It is supposed to have lots of the usual viewing options, but I don't use them. This is my first large plasma screen and I was surprised how much heat it throws out. But it has worked perfectly for more than a year. I plan to fix it on a wall mount, but given the amount of heat it generates I will ensure that it is not fixed right up against the wall. I really think it must need some open ventilation around it. In terms of looks I found it rather conservative and almost boring looking. Can't get it to work with the Sky remote control, so I need to use 2 different remote controls. In many ways this TV can only be really judged when I get HD signals and also start to use the HDMI port, but on the other hand I have no reason to complain about it. The one irritating thing about these TV's (as with a lot of other things) is that the codes and models change so quickly that after 6 months you are left with the feeling that you have an out-of-date model.
